Mountain Climbing at Mount Adams

Here’s one of my favorite past mountain climbing moments – at the peak! Approx 12,215 feet above sea level, at Mount Adams, the second-highest mountain peak in the State!

Mount Adams, known by a few Native American tribes as Klickitat or Pahto, is a stratovolcano with the possibility of becoming active at some point in the future, located in the Cascade Mountain Range. Although Adams has not erupted in more than 1,000 years, it is technically not considered extinct by geologists. It is the second-highest mountain in the state, after Mount Rainier.

Mount Adams was named after President John Adams, and is a member of the Cascade Volcanic Arc, and is one of the arc’s largest volcanoes, located in a remote wilderness approximately 34 miles east of Mount St. Helens. The eastern side of the mountain is designated as a part of the territory of the Native American Yakama Nation.
